The Hofstra University cheer team won the 2015 Universal Cheer Association (UCA) championship in the small co-ed Division 1 competition, marking the sixth time the team has won a national title in the last seven years. The Hofstra dance team won two titles in the Universal Dance Association (UDA) competition – third place in the Division 1 jazz category, and fifth place in the Division 1 hip-hop category. Additionally, the Hofstra cheer team took first place in the All Girl Partner Stunt Competition. The championships were held over the weekend in Orlando, Florida.
At last year’s UCA competition the Hofstra Cheer team took second place in the Small Coed Division I competition. In the last six years, the cheer team held the national first place title for five consecutive years.
The Hofstra Dance team took second place in both Division I Hip Hop and Dance Team Doubles Jazz Finals at the 2014 nationals, and placed fourth place in Division I Jazz.The Dance Team has maintained their reputation as a premier college level co-curricular dance program, holding top national ranking by UDA for more than a decade. This year the dance team is eager to gain back its first place win from 2013 in division 1 hip-hop.
“I feel privileged to have gotten to see a preview of our talented cheerleading and dance teams before their send off to nationals. The excitement was contagious and I know they will make Hofstra very proud. I wish them much luck in the competition,” commented Dean of Students and Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, Sofia Pertuz.
