Prof. Hussein Rashid: “Why Peter Kassig was the Islamic State’s greatest threat”

Religion News Service

In a commentary for the Religion News Service Religion Professor Hussein Rashid writes about the murder of humanitarian Peter Kassig by ISIS: “With each bloody act, Islamic State militants demonstrate their need for self-importance overrides any moral, ethical, or religious boundary. Peter Kassig’s beheading is a microcosm of all the Islamic State wants, and religion is not high on that list.”

Professor Rashid also wrote an editorial, “The Delicate Politics of School Holidays,” for RNS about the Montgomery County (Md.) Board of Education’s decision to remove the names of all holidays from the school calendar. Dr. Rashid writes, “Changing school calendars is a politically difficult maneuver because it makes statements about community identity. …When they do not see their religion being recognized by the schools, students may feel isolated or be forced to make difficult decisions between religious observance and academic success. … And that’s a choice nobody wants to make.”
