The Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine held its Annual Scholarship Day earlier this month, featuring the investigative work of nearly 50 medical students.
An event that highlights collaborative and experiential learning, Scholarship Day is held each fall at the School of Medicine to showcase the work of medical students who participated in summer research activities. From global population studies to disease interventions, all student studies are guided from start to finish by School of Medicine faculty mentors.
“What I learned in class and in case discussions at the School of Medicine came together through research,” said Arline Edmond, second year medical student who was conducted a population study in women’s health within an underserved area of New York City. “Understanding more about the process of posing questions, investigating, and learning to communicate with patients and professionals has enhanced my experience–it will prove beneficial in my work as a physician.”
Students at the School of Medicine who pursue research studies are invited to submit an abstract and present a poster on their work. A committee made up of School of Medicine faculty reviews all submitted abstracts. On Scholarship Day, students have the opportunity to present their work in poster presentations while also verbalizing the basis for their investigations to event participants and attendees.
“I am impressed by not only the breadth of inquiry, but also the students’ ability to explain the material they studied in a professional manner,” said Veronica Catanese, MD, MBA, Vice Dean and Dean for Academic Affairs and the Dr. Leo A. Guthart Endowed Chair at the School of Medicine. “It’s clear that blending a rigorous curriculum with practical experience is working for our students and faculty.”
Funding and support for student summer research activities at the School of Medicine is provided by the Meadowbrook Women’s Intitiative, the Cheryl Manne Foundation, the Chasanoff Family and the Dr. Leo A. Guthart endowment.
