Dr. Javier Izquierdo Publishes Research on Land Use History of Forest Soils

Soil Biology and Biochemistry

Soil Biology and BiochemistryDr. Javier Izquierdo, assistant professor of biology, is the lead author in an article published in the journal Soil Biology and Biochemistry looking at the long-term effect of agricultural activities on the diversity of bacteria involved in the nitrogen cycle of forest soils. Several studies have examined how land use changes, such as the cessation of agricultural activities, affect the biogeochemistry of forest soils.

Very few forest sites in the Northeastern US have been studied from the point of view of relevant soil microbial populations. Dr. Izquierdo’s work revealed that more than 100 years after agricultural activities have ceased, it is still possible to detect their effect on forest soils.
