The School of Health Sciences and Human Services and the Graduate Programs in Rehabilitation Counseling are hosting VOICE Day 2014 on Friday, Oct. 3, a day-long event featuring workshops and a community fair about career options, resources, and advocacy for people living with disabilities.
The event runs from 10 am – 3 pm and will be held in the Multipurpose Room at the Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus. Attendance is free, but registration is required.
“VOICE Day – which stands for Vision of Integration, Choice and Equality — is an opportunity for people with disabilities, as well as students, parents, employers, and other professionals to network, exchange ideas and information, and discover better pathways to achieving career and personal goals,” said Andrea Nerlich, PhD, VOICE Day chairperson and associate professor in the Department of Counseling and Mental Health Professions.
Ten workshop options address topics such as how to successfully search for a new job, tackling a challenging work history, applying to and navigating college, learning the skills of self-determination, optimizing health and wellness, and the top careers of 2014.
Representatives from nearly 50 businesses, community groups, and government agencies across Long Island and Queens will also be available throughout the day to discuss their services. Among the organizations participating: Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR), Mental Health Association of Nassau County, Transitions of Long Island/NSLIJ, The Self-Advocacy Association of NYS, and Department of Labor Hempstead Works, as well as Hofstra’s own Office of Services for Students with Disabilities and the clinics of the Saltzman Community Center.
In two interactive exhibit rooms on school transition and career exploration, experts will be on hand to assist participants with assessment, resume review, mock interviews, and other activities that will help with the leap from an educational setting to adult roles or career goals.
In addition, the Nassau County Department of Human Services will sponsor the opening of the 25th Annual Art Expressions exhibit as part of VOICE Day. This exhibit will remain on display in Axinn Library, 10th floor, from Oct. 16 to Dec. 5, 2014.
