Class of 2018 Makes Waves at Convocation

Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz welcomed new first-year students this morning during the University’s Fall Convocation, an annual tradition on the first day of classes.

President Rabinowitz was joined onstage by academic deans, administrators, faculty, and student representatives at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse as he encouraged the Class of 2018 to work hard and discover their passion during their time at Hofstra.   “You are about to embark upon one of the truly exciting and liberating adventures, which is the start of a lifelong journey of self-directed learning that will introduce you to new concepts and new ideas and worlds you have not yet explored,” he said.

Student Government Association President Mark Atkinson ’15, a rhetoric major, energized the crowd and compared them to pieces of a puzzle.   “Even though you don’t know exactly where your piece belongs right now, you know you are an important part of this university,” he said.  “We could not make the picture of Hofstra University without you.”

He then invited all students, faculty, and administrators to join him in a Playhouse-wide wave.  “[This] is representative of what the Hofstra community is going to do in the world in the future, which is make waves.”    Watch:
