Biology’s Dr. Nick Santangelo Receives Research Grant

Nicholas Santangelo, assistant professor of biology, has been awarded a grant from the American Cichlid Association titled “The neurobiology of monogamy and biparental care in the convict cichlid fish.”  The funding will allow him to explore the evolution of hormone pathways in the brain that enable pair bonding and parental care in monogamous species.

Dr. Santangelo joined the Hofstra faculty last fall 2013, after serving as an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Eastern Kentucky University where he received numerous awards for teaching and mentorship. His research includes field studies in fish behavior, including examination of reproduction, parental care, aggression, and social dynamics in various species. Dr. Santangelo teaches courses such as Animal Form and Function, Human Physiology, and Hormones and Behavior.
