Read why Evan Cornog, dean of the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication, says diversity is still an issue in the nation’s newsrooms and what Hofstra is doing to help change that:
“Hofstra University: Educating the Next Generation of Journalists,” Ailes Apprentice Program newsletter, 6/8/14
The Ailes Apprentice Program, created by Fox News CEO Roger Ailes, is a competitive one-year program for minority journalists. As an extension of the program, the Fox News Channel University/Ailes Rising Apprentice Scholarship offers rising juniors and seniors the chance to win a $10,000 scholarship and paid internship.
Hofstra students who have won the scholarship include Luz Peña ’12, who is now reporting for MundoFOX in Los Angeles, and Claudia Balthazar ’14, who is currently participating in the Carnegie-Knight News21 fellowship program and was recently named Student Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists.
