Biology Prof. Ronald Sarno Co-Authors Paper on Ecological Effects of Coyotes

Urban Ecosystems

Dr. Ronald Sarno, associate professor of biology, was a co-author of “A comparative study between enteric parasites of Coyotes in a protected and suburban habitat,” which appeared in the March 2014 edition of Urban Ecosystems.

The article focuses on coyotes that inhabit Florida and looks at their ecological effects upon local ecosystems and the difference in enteric parasites in coyotes from protected and suburban habitats. Knowledge of parasites that infect coyotes is essential to determine if management measures are needed to prevent transmission between wild and domestic animals, because wild and domestic animals can act as reservoirs for parasites that can be transmitted to humans.
