Awards Given at Spring Fine Arts Student Show

Hofstra’s Department of Fine Arts, Design, Art History is presenting its annual Student Art Show through May 12 at Calkins Hall. The show features hundreds of pieces of the finest artwork created by Hofstra students in painting, drawing, 3D, photography, design and new media.

There was an opening reception for the art show during Common Hour on April 30. Awards were given to the following students for outstanding art in a variety of categories.

Hofstra University Purchase Award ~Daniel Jones

The Hofstra University Purchase Award is a $1,000 award, made possible by the generosity of anonymous donors, that allows the Department of Fine Arts, Design, Art History to acquire a work exhibited in the student show. Now in its third year, the eventual goal of the award program is to invite other departments on campus to choose a work to display in their area.

Outside Juror Award ~ Matthew Aponte

The Outside Juror Award was judged this year by Matthew Mahler ’04, who holds a B.S. in art education from Hofstra and an MFA in painting from CUNY Queens College. Matthew co-founded of Small Black Door, an experimental art space that was located in Ridgewood, New York.
