Two Hofstra students, Julia McGuire and Laina Briedis (above, l-r), are finalists for awards in creative writing from the Hollins University Lex Allen Literary Festival in Roanoke, VA. The festival, an annual event since 1960, takes place this year on April 5. Both Laina and Julia are dual majors in elementary education and English, with a concentration in creative writing.
Julia, a sophomore at Hofstra from New London, New Hampshire, hopes to teach second grade and eventually become certified in special education. She says, “I hope my career allows me to travel and teach in many parts of the world.” Her poem, “Worn Out Shoes,” was inspired by her passion for dance.
Laina, a junior from Massapequa, Long Island, was nominated for her short story, “Plucked,” about having one’s childhood innocence stripped away. Laina’s career plans include becoming an elementary school teacher and continuing work in writing and photography.
