The 40th Annual Hempstead for Hofstra/Hofstra for Hempstead Scholarship Dinner will honor five individuals and one organization with long records of service to the Hempstead community, including native son and NBA legend Julius “Dr. J” Erving.
The dinner celebrates a tradition that began when a dedicated and caring group of volunteers met for the first time four decades ago to raise scholarship funds for deserving students from the Village of Hempstead to attend Hofstra University. This year’s dinner will be held Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Dining Room of the Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus.
Since its founding, hundreds of young men and women have benefited from Hempstead for Hofstra/Hofstra for Hempstead scholarships. The Committee does more than award scholarship however; it strengthens the bond between the Village of Hempstead and Hofstra University with the annual presentation of the prestigious Unispan Award to individuals whose professional or personal lives have enriched the Hempstead community. The award, named for the original pedestrian bridge over Hempstead Turnpike that unites Hofstra’s north and south campuses, symbolizes the close ties between the University and the Village of Hempstead.
This year’s landmark anniversary dinner will honor the following 2014 Unispan Award recipients:
Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Basketball Legend, Entrepreneur, Author
Dorian R. Glover, Owner and Principal, Law Office of Dorian R. Glover
Lee Jones, Official, National Basketball Association (retired)
Julius and Joysetta Pearse, President and Executive Director, The African Atlantic Genealogical Society, Inc.
Student Mentoring Program, Nassau County Bar Association
