Curious seniors gathered behind the steel doors of the Netherlands Café kitchen last week to explore the post-Ramen Noodle culinary world.

The cooking class was the latest installment of the Senior Seminars: From Backpack to Briefcase Series, sponsored by Office of Student Leadership and Activities.

The program, which was created last year, is designed to give graduating students the tools they need post-graduation by providing seminars in topics that aren’t covered in college classes. The nine, free seminars cover topics like apartment hunting, budget balancing and interviewing tips.

During the cooking session, OSLA partnered with Lackmann Culinary Services to provide seven students with the basics of preparing an “adult” meal.

The students prepared Chicken Francese with roasted potatoes and green beans, and a gorgonzola salad. Executive Chef Kevin Kenny led the class, offering advice about managing a meal for one or for ten, how to cut down on prep time and how to keep it all in one pan.

Henry Schwartz, a philosophy major, joined the senior seminar program after years of involvement with OSLA. But he was especially attracted to the cooking seminar: “I was thinking the other day, like ‘wait, after college I won’t have a meal plan to eat whatever I want.”

Robyn Kaplan, associate director of OSLA, said the goal for the program to cover topics seniors want and need to learn about. But, just in case, participating students get tickets for a raffle with an end-of-year prize of a senior week package for two and a diploma frame.

“That’s part of the incentive, sure, but these are also really good sessions,” Kaplan said. “We have testimonials from past students saying they wish they were mandatory, that they really helped them to navigate the world post-college.”
