Teams Take Top Honors at Championships in Orlando
Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Dance team took home a World Championship title, while the Pride Cheer team upheld its national first place title for a fifth consecutive year at the 2013 Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA)/Universal Dance Association (UDA), College National Championship in Orlando, Florida.
The Hofstra Cheer Team’s latest title marks the eighth national championship for the team since 2003. Previously, the squad won national titles in the small co-ed division in 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. Hofstra took another first place title in the All Girl Partner Stunt Competition (featuring Monique Hutton, Arianna Scanlon, Brittany Brown-Webster and Kaitlyn Sexton).
“The team has been determined and practicing all season long to live out their 2013 dream. While most University students are on break for the intersession, our cheerleaders are practicing twice a day to master their routine. With seven previous College National titles there is a ton of pressure to live up to the reputation of the program. We have the recipe for success and I am so proud of these men and women who defended their title and took home another win for Hofstra University,” said Cheer Team Coach Christine Farina.
Hofstra’s Dance Team took home a first place win in the Division I Hip Hop, and scored a second place win in the Division I Jazz Competition at the College National Championship. The Dance team continued their winning streak at the 2013 World University Championship, taking first place in the Dance Team Doubles Jazz division (Keri Olsen and Zach Galasso) and defending their second place title in Dance Team Jazz.
“After a successful year last year, the pressure was on to do it again. We started preparing for the 2013 Nationals when we got home last January. I wanted to make sure we all worked hard to win another championship and I am so proud that we did,” said Dance Team Coach Kelly Olsen. “Now the pressure is on once again for Hofstra at the 2014 Nationals,” commented Coach Olsen. The Dance Team has maintained their reputation as a premier college level co-curricular dance program, holding national ranking by UDA for more than a decade.
“Year in and year out, our Cheer and Dance teams perform at the highest level and continue to show why they are tops at what they do. Their dedication and commitment, and as a result, their results, are second to none! All of us here at Hofstra are very proud of them,” commented Dean of Students, Pete Libman.
