Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … The Phobia and Trauma Clinic at Hofstra University’s Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center is offering free counseling and therapeutic services for Long Islanders who have suffered great loss and hardship as a result of Hurricane Sandy. For more information please call 516-463-5660.

The Long Island community has been severely impacted by the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. It can be difficult to mentally cope at a time like this. How do you know if you or a loved one should seek counseling to cope with the aftermath of the storm? Ask: Is it challenging to make immediate decisions, or plan ahead for the next few weeks? Have you lost hope for a better future? These problems are associated with severe emotional distress (e.g. sadness, anger, fear, hopelessness, helplessness).

The Phobia and Trauma Clinic is directed by Mitchell Schare, Ph.D., who closely oversees a staff of nine doctoral psychology students to offer unique and technologically advanced treatments for patients who have experienced life-threatening or highly unusual events that may have caused posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center has been operating since 1991 and is credited for being one of the first college-based multidisciplinary clinical service centers in the country. The Phobia and Trauma Clinic is part of Saltzman Center’s Psychological Evaluation, Research and Counseling Clinic (PERC). The Saltzman Center is also home to the Diane Lindner-Goldberg Child Care Institute, the Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic, the Reading/Writing Learning Clinic and the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic. The cost of services offered by the Saltzman Center is just a fraction of the cost of private treatment. Just like other areas at Hofstra, the nominal fees at the Saltzman Center clinics may be subsidized by a variety of financial aid opportunities.

To make an appointment or for more information on the Phobia and Trauma Clinic call (516) 463-5660.
