Hofstra Booster alumni, friends, and family turned out to enjoy our biggest event of the year – the annual Miniature Golf Tournament, which was held July 25 at Heartland Golf Park. Golfers of all ages joined in the festivities. Participants enjoyed a morning of golf, raffles, refreshments, hole-in-one contests and prizes. Several hole-in-one winners won new cars, which were miniature, of course! The Hofstra Booster Alumni Association would like to thank our hole sponsors and raffle prize donors. A portion of the proceeds is used to support our Endowed Spirit Support Scholarship.

We held our annual Raffle Drawing and Ticket Holders Reception on May 1, at Libby and Joseph G. Shapiro Alumni House. Approximately $10,000 in cash prizes were awarded to eight lucky winners, and the event raised $10,000 in support of the Veterans Alumni Chapter Endowed Scholarship. Thank you to all who purchased raffle tickets in support of our scholarship.On May 21, we hosted the Veterans Plaza Dedication in the Memorial Quad. More than 75 alumni and friends attended the ceremony in honor of Hofstra veterans who have served our country and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We encourage all alumni to view the memorial plaques, which adorn the benches in the plaza surrounding the Victory Eagle. We are proud of this accomplishment and thank all those whose support helped make this event possible.
Our Annual Veterans Day Salute will be held on November 5, in conjunction with the Hofstra vs. New Hampshire football game. Join us for a pre-game celebration, where we will honor our 2005 Veterans of the Year.

This spring brought another successful and active programming season for the Zarb School of Business Alumni Association. Martin Gatins, vice president of Cartier, kicked off the series and spoke to more than 100 guests on the secrets to Cartier’s success, creative marketing, quality and longevity. One lucky participant walked away with a Cartier watch!
Our Annual Wine-Tasting and Networking Reception brought together alumni and friends for an evening of connecting, delicious food and wine. Under the instruction of Hofstra Continuing Education professor and wine consultant Robert Windorf, alumni learned the finer points of wine-tasting including the specifics of rating and how to buy wines.
In May, attorney and author Alan Sklover returned to campus to present his seminar “Negotiating Your New Job, 5 Steps Forward, No Steps Back,” as well as his book of the same name. Alumni and current graduate students learned about marketing their skills as well as using effective communication with new employers to get optimum responsibilities and salary.

11th Annual Summer Alumni Leadership Institute
The 11th Annual Summer Alumni Leadership Institute had volunteers tapping their feet with the “Songs of Summer” theme. At the kick-off dinner on Friday night, participants met with Alumni Organization President Bill Agresti ’78, received a warm welcome from Dr. Herman A. Berliner ’94, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, and learned about the new happenings at Hofstra. The HART and Hofstra CAN! Volunteers of the Year, Michael Meer ’85 and Michael Devlin ’89, respectively, were also recognized.On Saturday, the program began with a welcome breakfast, followed by a full day of interactive workshops. Sessions covered a range of topics, including academics, admissions, the Alumni Organization, leadership development, communication and much more! Participants enjoyed campus tours highlighting several of Hofstra’s new buildings and creative arts facilities.

CAST (Connecting Alumni & Students)
Earlier this year selected students representing some of the most influential areas at Hofstra came together to launch the CAST program, designed to provide students with opportunities to interact with alumni. Through the program, juniors and seniors, are directly involved with Alumni Organization programs and events, gaining an understanding about life after graduation.Heather Gibbons ’05, a member of the program and former Student Government president, believes “everyone benefits from relationships between students and alumni when they work together to improve and give back to Hofstra University. I joined the program because our love for Hofstra is the common bond.
During the spring semester, CAST members represented the student body at events such as the Veterans Alumni Chapter reception, Admitted Student Days, and Zarb School of Business Alumni Association events. In May, CAST hosted the Senior Send-Off, where the Class of 2005 gathered at Hofstra USA for an evening of food, fun, music, and raffle prizes. Graduating seniors were also welcomed into GOLD – Graduates Of the Last Decade – which plans programs for young alumni. Plans for the fall include Homecoming and the Alumni Awards Dinner, recruiting students for the Hofstra CAN! program, and hosting more networking events to connect alumni and students.

On May 11, Hofstra students had the opportunity to network and learn from alumni and other professionals at our first Alumni Organization Student Networking Reception. Executives from the fields of marketing, communications, law, banking and finance, real estate and insurance spoke with students about career choices, proper preparation and advice on what steps worked for them in building a career.Lana Harshaw ’07 said, “I thought it was great for us to communicate with professionals of the business world, because they were able to share with us their own personal experiences and give us information and advice.”

On June 14, the NYC Alumni Chapter hosted its first event, a Spring Networking Reception featuring special guest John DiScepolo ’94, sports anchor for FOX 5 New York. Alumni gathered at the Heartland Brewery in Times Square to network, re-connect and have a great time. Alumni in attendance received a NYC networking directory to help keep connected throughout the year. Upcoming events include a Yankees game, a monthly social at the Heartland Brewery in the Empire State Building the first Tuesday of every month, and the annual NYC Holiday Reception to be held on December 6, at Club 101 in Manhattan.
