tDr. Herman A. Berliner, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, is in his 40th year at Hofstra University, having joined the faculty in 1970 after receiving his PhD in economics from the City University of New York. Dr. Berliner’s areas of specialty as an economist include the economics of higher education. He presently also serves as a TIAA/CREF Institute Fellow, a Trustee of the North Shore School District, and Secretary of the Project GRAD Long Island Board of Directors. He is a regular blogger for Insidehighered.com, for which he writes about his experiences in and insights about higher education.

Dr. Bryant has served on the Hofstra English faculty since 1986. He was awarded a Fulbright grant that gave him the opportunity to teach courses on the American Renaissance and Early American Literature at the University of Rome (Sapienza) during the spring 2014 semester. He also received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities that is providing funding for his continued work on the Melville Electronic Library (MEL.hofstra.edu), a searchable collection of interlinked versions of Herman Melville’s manuscripts, print texts, sources, art work and other research and secondary materials that will make up a virtual literary “playground” for scholars, critics, students, and general readers.

Alan Singer

Alan Singer
Curriculum and TeachingAlan Singer has a weekly column on Huffington Post discussing national, state, and local educational issues and political concerns in the New York metropolitan area. His column frequently tweaks those in power and includes testimony from local teachers and students. In Hofstra University School of Education, he is a professor of secondary education and the director of social studies education. Singer is a former New York City high school social studies teacher and is editor of Social Science Docket, a joint publication of the New York State and New Jersey Councils for the Social Studies. He is also the author of Social Studies for Secondary Schools (Lawrence Erlbaum and Associates, 2nd edition, 2003) and editor of a 268-page secondary school curriculum guide, New York and Slavery: Complicity and Resistance.
