Outlawing Racist Speech

Newsweek

In the wake of escalating tensions from a rally by white supremacists and Neo-Nazis in Charlottesville, Virginia, Newsweek republished its June 6, 1988 story on outlawing racist speech. The article highlights a legal conference at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law that examined whether racist speech falls within First Amendment protections.  It also quotes Professor of Law Monroe Freedman, a noted pioneer and scholar in the field of legal ethics, who died in February 2015.
