Protecting Terrapins and Their Eggs

Russell Burke
Fox 5 NY

Fox 5 NY interviewed Professor of Biology Russell Burke at the the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge where he spends summers with Hofstra students working with diamondback terrapins and studying their nesting habits. Turtles are being killed off faster than they are being replaced, largely due to careless drivers. To help boost the population, Dr. Burke and his students dig up terrapin eggs and study hatch rates in a controlled environment. It is uncommon for eggs to hatch on their own because they have so many predators.
