Student Celebrates Publication of Her First Novel

English major Hebah Uddin is celebrating the publication of her first novel, The Gauntlet, a YA adventure story with a Middle Eastern flair. To honor Uddin, the English Department is throwing a party and book signing on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, from 11:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m. at the Plaza Room Middle, 127 Mack Student Center, North Campus. The event is open to the Hofstra community.

gauntletThe Gauntlet – which Uddin wrote under the pen name Karuna Riazi – is about a trio of friends from New York City who find themselves trapped inside a mechanical board game that they must dismantle in order to save themselves and generations of other children. The Gauntlet is the second book published by Salaam Reads, a division of Simon & Schuster Books that seeks to publish stories that feature main characters who are Muslim. Uddin, who says she grew up ravenously reading books, admits she never saw main characters like her young self in the stories she loved. She is proud that cultural and social references so familiar to her upbringing are a part of The Gauntlet.

For more information on Wednesday’s book party, contact the Department of English at 516-463-5454.
