Med School Ranks High

Just two years following the graduation of its first class of students, Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine ranks among the top medical schools in the country for primary care and research, according to the new 2018 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools. Hofstra Northwell ranks #55 for primary care and #71 in the medical school research category, a leap of more than 10 points compared to last year’s rankings.

“In a relatively short period, we have proven that our patient-centered and driven approach to training the next generation of physicians is working for our students and faculty,” said Lawrence Smith, MD, dean of the School of Medicine. “I could not be more pleased with our results and look forward to continued success.”

For the U.S. News’ rankings of the Best Medical Schools for Primary Care and Research, 170 fully accredited medical schools were surveyed in fall 2016 and early 2017. Of 170 schools, 118 provided the data needed to calculate the rankings based on the indicators used in the medical school primary care and research models.

Rankings for both primary care and research are based on a weighted average of indicators.  Indicators shared by both models include student selectivity admissions statistics (MCAT, GPA and acceptance rate) and faculty-student ratio. The medical school research model factors in research activity, while the medical school primary care model adds a measure of the proportion of MD graduates entering primary care specialties.

Welcoming its inaugural class of students in 2011, Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine is the first allopathic medical school to open in New York State in more than 40 years. Hofstra University and Northwell Health are partners in the founding and operation of the School of Medicine, an institution built upon the strong medical education programs of Northwell, as well as the robust research and academic programs of both Hofstra University and Northwell’s Feinstein Institute for Medical Research.  In 2015, the School of Medicine’s first graduating class achieved 100 percent residency placement within top institutions throughout the country as did the class to follow in 2016.

Currently, Hofstra Northwell is comprised of more than 2,400 faculty across 25 academic departments and enrolls a diverse community of 400 students.
