The Day

Professor Emeritus of English G. Thomas Couser shares his personal connection to war-torn Aleppo in an op-ed for The Day, a newspaper in New London, CT. Dr. Couser writes how his father had taken a teaching assignment at Aleppo College in 1930. After finding correspondence many years later describing his father’s life and work there, Dr. Couser traveled to Aleppo with family in 2010 to retrace his father’s journey.

Dr. Couser is the founding director of the disability studies program at Hofstra University and his teaching interests include life writing such as autobiography and memoir, and disability studies. His work has been published in numerous articles and books, including his 2009 work, Signifying Bodies: Disability and Contemporary Life Writing, and most recently, Memoir: An Introduction.
