news-carina-loscalzo rs

Professor Carina Loscalzo, program director for the Physician Assistant Studies program in the Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies, won a $40,250 grant from the New York Developmental Disabilities Planning Council for the project, “Partners in Health Education for People with Disabilities.”  Shannan Ricoy, clinical coordinator of the PA Studies Program, is her co-investigator.

The project focuses on developing and implementing a comprehensive curriculum for Physician Assistant Studies students that includes training in the care of patients with developmental disabilities.  Through various training models including lectures, home visits, case presentations, clinical experiences and reflective journaling, students will improve communication skills, gain an alternative perspective, and learn how to engage families, caregivers and community-based agencies as partners in the care of patients, among other skills.

Professors Loscalzo and Ricoy also hope to use the curriculum to help fulfill the PA program’s mission to train health care professionals who have in-depth knowledge of the specialized health and mental health needs of underserved populations, which often lack access to quality health care.
