Hofstra’s Irish Studies Program, which offers students the opportunity to minor in Irish Studies or take courses on Irish business, dance, film, history, literature, politics, religion, theater, and society, has updated its schedule of events for Spring 2016. These have been planned to help mark the centennial of the Easter Rising and are free and open to the public. For more information contact Dr. Gregory Maney at 516-463-6182  or Gregory.M.Maney@hofstra.edu

Wednesday, March 16, 11:15 a.m. (Common Hour)

Irish Studies is partnering with Library Services to present the annual Celebrating the Irish Writer Day. All are invited to recite a short snippet from their favorite reading by an Irish author or with an Irish-related theme. Readings about the Easter Rising are particularly encouraged. A light lunch will be available along with an Irish step dancing performance. The event will take place on the main floor of Axinn Library.

The Reel Ireland Film Series presents a screening of Michael Collins. Written and directed by Neil Jordan and starring Liam Neeson and Alan Rickman, the film uses the life and death of Collins to reveal both unity and divisions among Irish nationalists in the aftermath of the Easter Rising. Professor Patricia Navarra will facilitate a discussion afterwards. The screening will be held at the Guthart Cultural Center Theater, first floor, Axinn Library, South Campus. (The film had been originally scheduled in February and was cancelled due to inclement weather.)

Tuesday, March 22, 12:45 p.m.

In a highly visual presentation titled “Imagining the Future by Celebrating the Past,” Dr. Greg Maney will draw from his research on murals and other public symbolic displays in West Belfast to highlight changing and contrasting representations of the Easter Rising. The event will take place at the Student Center Plaza Room Center, North Campus.
