Hofstra University is excited to welcome new students who are joining our campus community for the first time this week. Welcome Week 2014 kicks off Thursday, Aug. 28 with a five-day slate of activities where incoming students are introduced to academic and social life at the University, take part in its rich culture and traditions, and explore the diversity of both the student body and the surrounding communities.
Students and parents will arrive on campus beginning Thursday morning, unloading cars and decorating dorm rooms before classes begin on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Be on the lookout for President Stuart Rabinowitz and Vice President for Student Affairs W. Houston Dougharty, who will be zipping through campus together on a golf cart to welcome our newest residents. This year, the University also welcomes Sofia Pertuz as our new Dean of Students.
On Friday, Aug. 29, students will join author and New York University professor Kwame Anthony Appiah for a discussion and signing of his book, The Honor Code, this year’s common reading assignment. The book focuses on the human sense of honor – both for good and bad – and on the nature of social and moral reform.
Other highlights from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1 include a Class of 2018 group photo, trips to New York City, a campus movie screening, socials and dance parties, workshops and information sessions about majors and clubs, a murder mystery dinner theater, and friendly games of kickball and ultimate Frisbee.
