$1.4M to fund superstorm Sandy social-science projects

Dr. Christa Farmer, associate professor of geology, is heading up one of 10 projects to split $1.4 million awarded by NOAA and the Sea Grant groups in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut for Superstorm Sandy-related research. Farmer, Dr. Mary Anne Trasciatti from the Department of Rhetoric and Dr. Elisabeth Ploran from the Department of Psychology will study cultural and language barriers that may have contributed to the decision by many residents of the ethnically diverse city of Long Beach not to evacuate before the storm. Their work will be used to help government and weather officials develop better ways to communicate early warnings and evacuation recommendations.
