Hofstra University is saddened by the loss of Dennis Burke, Director of Biology Laboratories, who passed away on January 7, 2014. Dennis spent his entire adult life at Hofstra. After graduating from Hofstra in 1971 he was hired as a stock clerk in the Biology Department in 1972. In 1973, he became laboratory manager and in 1985, he was promoted to the position of Director of Biology Laboratories, a position he held until his death.
Dennis, who earned an MA in Biology and an MBA from Hofstra, was a long-time adjunct faculty member in the Biology Department. In commenting on Dennis’ untimely death, HCLAS Dean Bernard J. Firestone said, “Dennis was a dedicated and effective laboratory director who managed extremely well the growing needs of the department as it responded to the surging enrollments of the past several years. This is a tremendous loss for the department, for its faculty and for his wife, Cathy, and daughter, Elisabeth.”
Dr. Russell Burke, chairperson of the Biology Department said, “Dennis will be remembered as being generous, empathetic, and kind; supportive in every way he could be to departmental faculty, instructors and students.”
The wake will be at M. A. Connell, 934 New York Avenue, Huntington Station, NY 11746, 631-427-1123, on Friday, Jan 10, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral is on Saturday, Jan 11, at 9:30 a.m. , at St. Patrick’s Church, 400 Main St., Huntington, NY, 631-385-3311.
