Hofstra senior midfielder Tara Kerns and junior forward Sam Scolarici were named honorable mention University Division Women’s Scholar All-East Region selections by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Kerns, a physical education major from Chesapeake, Va., has a 3.75 cumulative grade point average. On the playing field, Kerns earned all-second team honors from the Colonial Athletic Association in 2013.

A member of two NCAA Tournament teams in her tenure at Hofstra, she posted a goal and an assist in her final collegiate campaign and recorded her first career goal in her 60th game when she found the net in the 75th minute against Boston College on Sept. 1. The defensive-minded midfielder also helped Hofstra record five shutouts this season. Kerns was also the only Hofstra player named to the all-academic team.

Scolarici recorded a 3.57 grade point average. The journalism major from Aldie, Va. set a Hofstra single-season record with 18 goals to break the previous mark set by Carlene Wawrzonek in 1994. Scolarici earned first-team All-CAA honors and led the league in goals and points with 38. She netted five game-winning goals on the season.

The collective Hofstra women’s team garnered NSCAA recognition as a 2012-13 College Team Academic Award winner. The program posted a 3.67 cumulative grade point average under head coach Simon Riddiough.
