Professor Robert Katz from the Frank G. Zarb School’s Department of Accounting, Taxation, and Legal Studies in Business was recently awarded the Leadership in Law Award by Long Island Business News. The Leadership in Law Award is given to individuals whose leadership, both in the legal profession and in the community, has left a positive and lasting impact on Long Island.
Professor Katz, a senior partner at Katz, Bernstein, & Katz LLP, has helped local residents and business owners solve tax problems and effectively structure estate plans and business transactions for over 50 years. He also established the tax preparation clinic at Hofstra, which later became affiliated with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Preparation program. Through this clinic Professor Katz supervised students in preparing tax returns at libraries throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties for senior citizens and others who could not afford tax preparation services. For his efforts, he earned the Commissioner of Internal Revenue Award for Volunteerism.
