This afternoon Philip Levine, a Pulitzer Prize winner and the former U.S. poet laureate, arrived on campus as the first speaker of Hofstra’s 10th annual Great Writers, Great Readings series.

resized 2Mr. Levine met with undergraduate and graduate creative writing students in the Hofstra Hall Parlor to sign books, share his experiences and answer questions about the writing process.

Tonight at 7 p.m. Mr. Levine will give a more formal reading and sign books at the Guthart Cultural Center Theater, 1st floor, Axinn Library. That event is free and open to the public. For more information on that event, visit

Mr. Levine’s recent books include News of the World, Breath, The Mercy, and The Simple Truth, which won the Pulitzer Prize. In 2000 Mr. Levine was elected a chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.
