Sam Shepard’s A Lie of the Mind is the first production to be presented this academic year by Hofstra University’s Department of Drama and Dance. Performance dates are October 4-13, 2013, at the Black Box Theater, located in the New Academic Building on Hofstra’s South Campus. In 2010 Ben Brantley of The New York Times wrote A Lie of the Mind is “Mr. Shepard’s richest and most penetrating play, a 20th-century masterwork of a family portrait to be compared with Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night and Harold Pinter’s Homecoming.

Show times are:

Friday, October 4 and 11, at 8 p.m.

Saturday, October 5 and 12, at 8 p.m.

Sunday, October 6 and 13, at 2 p.m.

Thursday, October 10, at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $10, $8 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community may receive up to two free tickets upon presentation of a current HofstraCard. Tickets may be purchased online at www.Tickets.com.  Tickets are also available at the John Cranford Adams Box Office at (516) 463-6644, Monday through Friday, 11:15 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Available tickets will also be sold at the Black Box Theater, starting 90 minutes before each performance.

Professor Jean Dobie Giebel, director of this production, has written in her director’s notes of the play, “The deeper I travelled into A Lie of the Mind, the more I fell in love with the characters in the play, and the more I loved them, the harder I laughed at their foibles, and cried at their catastrophes.  They are my family.  I find their relationships as familiar as old songs I know too well, but played somehow out of tune.  My heart aches for them, and hopes for them.  In a terrifying way, they are America.”
