Political Science Professor Leslie Feldman contributed a chapter to the book Planet of the Apes and Philosophy, edited by John Huss (July 2013, Open Court Press). Dr. Feldman’s chapter is titled “From Twilight Zone to Forbidden Zone,” and she draws parallels between the movie and the teachings of famous philosophers, such as Thomas Hobbes, Plato, Alexis de Tocqueville and others. Rod Serling, the creative mind behind the classic Twilight Zone series, also wrote the screenplay for Planet of the Apes, and Dr. Feldman reflects on recurring themes that appear in both – beauty vs. ugliness; nuclear war; Adam and Eve; pessimistic vs. optimistic views of where mankind is heading.
