Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … Hofstra University’s School of Education is launching a Master of Arts in Technology for Learning program this fall 2013, intended for individuals with diverse professional goals and interests who are aspiring to become leaders in educational technology and want to gain in-depth understanding of the field.
All students in the M.A. program will learn to create interactive learning activities for delivery on SMART Boards and have the opportunity to create educational games for delivery on iPads, tablet computers, and other mobile devices
Graduate Program Director Roberto Joseph says, “Technology is changing how we develop teachers and how we look at the presentation of content and knowledge in the classroom. Being a teacher is no longer just about presenting information. The role of the teacher in the digital age, in my opinion, is as facilitator helping students cypher through all the content that is available to them and helping them to be critical of that information and to evaluate it.”
The M.A. program is a hybrid program, meaning that it is a mixture of online and face-to-face classroom learning. The program provides advanced studies in the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation of educational technologies. Special emphasis is placed on designing innovative ways of using technology to help students relate new experiences and ideas to what they already know.
Professor Joseph continues, “Teachers have to come up with ways for figuring out all the technologies that are out there – not having to choose all of them but learning how to choose the right one for the content they are teaching in the classroom. ‘Why am I bringing in the podcast?’ or ‘When should I use a wiki?’”
The mission of the M.A. program is to:
• Prepare students to use technology to transform teaching, learning and the curriculum;
• Help students develop the expertise needed to identify, analyze, and solve learning problems with the use of educational technology in a variety of settings;
• Help students develop the expertise to design educational technology tools that can be implemented in a classroom environment; and
• Help students gain hands-on experience with emerging technologies in state-of-the-art facilities.
This program is designed for students seeking Professional Certification who would like to “specialize” in educational technology. The degree offers 12 to 15 credits of content-pedagogy linkage for those holding initial certification in early childhood, childhood, educational technology, and adolescence education contents in English, languages other than English (French, German, Russian, Spanish), Mathematics, Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science); and special subjects; fine arts and music. Additionally, each student must complete an electronic portfolio illustrating his or her coursework and professional accomplishments.
The Master of Arts in Technology for Learning conforms to the recommendation for teacher preparation by the International Society for Technology in Education and the National Educational Technology Standards.
Educators who already have a master’s degree but would like an additional specialization in educational technology may want to consider Hofstra’s Advanced Certificate in Educational Technology, an online program.
